3 Putting Drills to Level Up Your Short Game This Summer
Share
Putting is where games are won — and lost. These three drills are designed to improve your consistency, control, and confidence on the green. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player, mastering these techniques will help you sink more putts and lower your score.
1. The Clock Drill (a.k.a. “Around the World”)
What it is: A consistency builder for short putts under pressure.
How to do it:
-
Place 6–12 balls in a circle around the hole, each 3 feet away.
-
Putt each ball in succession. Miss one? Start over.
-
Want a challenge? Move the circle out to 4 or 5 feet.
Why it works: It simulates real pressure and forces you to stay focused through every angle.
2. The Gate Drill
What it is: A precision drill to keep your stroke path clean and square. Check out this video for guidance.
How to do it:
-
Set two tees just wider than your putter head, a few inches in front of the ball.
-
Putt through the “gate” without touching the tees.
-
Add a second gate 12–18 inches ahead to reinforce your line.
Why it works: It trains your stroke to stay centered and eliminates face rotation.
3. The Ladder Drill (Distance Control Queen)
What it is: A feel-based drill to master pace and avoid three-putts.
How to do it:
-
Place markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 feet.
-
Try to stop the ball just past each marker — no more, no less.
-
Work your way up and back down the ladder.
Why it works: It builds rhythm and teaches you to control speed like a pro.
